Shot blasting machine is a kind of treatment technology to blast steel sand and steel shot on the surface of material object with high speed by shot blasting machine. Compared to other surface treatment technologies, it is faster, more efficient, and can partially preserve or punch the casting process.
American companies made the world’s first shot blasting machine in the 1930s. China’s production of shot blasting equipment began in the 1950s, mainly copying the technology of the former Soviet Union.
Shot blasting machines can also be used to remove burrs, scales and rust that may affect the integrity, appearance, or definition of object parts. The shot blasting machine can also remove contaminants from a partially coated surface and provide a surface profile that increases the adhesion of the coating to strengthen the workpiece.

A shot blasting machine differs from a shot peening machine in that it is used to reduce the fatigue life of the part to increase different surface stresses, to increase the strength of the part, or to prevent fretting.
Range of application
Shot blasting equipment is first used in the casting industry to remove the surface sand and oxide skin of cast steel and cast iron.
Almost all steel castings, gray castings, malleable steel pieces, ductile iron pieces and so on must be shot blasting. This is not only to remove the oxide skin and sand on the casting surface, but also an indispensable preparation process before casting quality inspection. For example, before the non-destructive inspection of large gas turbine casing, strict shot blasting cleaning must be carried out to ensure the reliability of the inspection results.
In general casting production, shot blasting cleaning is an essential process to find the surface defects such as subcutaneous pores, slag holes, sand, cold insulation, peeling and so on.
Surface cleaning of non-ferrous metal castings, such as aluminum alloy and copper alloy, in addition to removing oxide skin and finding surface defects of castings, the main purpose is to blast shot to remove burrs of die castings and obtain surface quality with decoration significance, so as to obtain comprehensive results. In metallurgical iron and steel production, shot blasting or pickling is a mechanical or chemical process for the removal of phosphorus skin to ensure high productivity in mass production of steel.
In the production of silicon steel sheet, stainless steel sheet and other alloy steel plates and strips, shot blasting or pickling treatment must be carried out after annealing in the cold rolling process to ensure the surface roughness and thickness accuracy of cold rolled steel plates.
Artifacts to strengthen
According to the modern metal strength theory, increasing the dislocation density inside the metal is the main direction to improve the metal strength.
It has been proved that shot blasting is an effective technique to increase dislocation structure. This is of great significance for some metal parts that cannot be hardened by phase change (such as martensite hardening) or require further strengthening on the basis of phase change hardening.
Aviation, aerospace industry, automobile, tractor and other parts require light quality, but the reliability requirements are getting higher and higher, the important technological measure is to use shot blasting technology to improve the strength and fatigue strength of components.
